how bullying can conclude to suicide.
Beware💯
Bullying is a devastating experience that can have profound psychological impacts on victims.
While many view bullying as an unfortunate but unavoidable part of growing up, the reality is that
it can lead to mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and in the most extreme cases,
suicide.
The statistics are deeply troubling. Studies have found that victims of bullying are 2 to 9 times
more likely to consider suicide than non-victims. According to dosomething.org, over 14% of high
school students seriously considered suicide in the past year, and almost 7% attempted it.
Bullying and cyberbullying were found to be major contributing factors.
The emotional toll of being constantly harassed, belittled, and socially excluded is immense.
Victims often experience anxiety about attending school, social withdrawal, decreased selfesteem, and feelings of loneliness, hopelessness and despair. When they see no escape from
the torment, suicide can start to seem like the only way out.
LGBTQ+ youth and those with disabilities are at particularly high risk. LGBTQ+ students
experience bullying at twice the rate of their heterosexual peers. Those perceived as different are
frequently targeted by bullies, compounding the isolation and lack of support they may already
feel.
The trauma of bullying doesn't just go away. The impacts can reverberate through victims' lives
in the form of substance abuse issues, difficulty maintaining relationships, poor academic and
occupational performance, and increased risk of issues like depression and PTSD down the line.
Addressing bullying must become a top priority. Schools need clear anti-bullying policies that are
strongly and consistently enforced. Mental health resources and counselling for both victims and
perpetrators is essential. Most importantly, fostering a culture of empathy, acceptance and
standing up for one another from an early age is crucial to breaking the cycle of cruelty.
No child should have to live in fear of harassment and abuse. The links between bullying and
suicide are clear - lives are at stake. It's on all of us to take action against this epidemic of
violence and create a culture where all feel safe, respected and empowered.
